As per Historical significance, the name Algarah meant “the first stop” or “the first halting spot/location” during the old Silk Route era, this used to be the first resting place for traders/porters and travelers coming from Tibet, going to Kalimpong. They would do a night halt and give rest to horses at Algarah.
Algarah is famous for the remains of the Ancient Fort or Gadi (Damsang Fort). The local people said, that the Lepcha King Gyabo Achuk was built this fort in the year 1690, with white stones that brought big round-shaped from river Reshi. The fort still exists . King Gaybo Achuk has many stories passed from generation to generation. It was believed that the King used to possess some supernatural powers. Some stories are there about some hidden treasure ,guarded by the King and were built a tunnel by his supernatural powers. After that ,it was taken by the British Government and used it for East India Company after the Anglo Bhutan War in the year 1864.
